Madonna Council - 3891, Knights of Columbus, received its Charter, and
was inaugurated on October 3, 1954, with the late Joseph J. Temming as
its first Grand Knight.
The new council held its first meeting in the Assumption Parish social hall.
As the membership grew, the need for a larger and more permanent home was
realized. There were a few temporary homes including Lake Nina and St. Margaret
Mary school basement, which is now named Madonna Hall. In the early sixties,
the council found a home at Stardust Hall in Mt. Healthy.
During the first five years, the Home Company was formed and its prime objective
was to find, finance, and maintain a permanent home for the council. At
this time, the wives formed our Ladies Auxiliary.
The spring of 1971 saw Madonna Council expanding further by purchasing the
property at 7700 Seward Avenue in Mt. Healthy. Due to the hard work and
pride of our members, the building was transformed into the council's meeting
chambers with a clubroom and kitchen in the basement, and is still our home
today.
Since 1954 many members of Assumption Parish, along with Brother Knights from St. Margaret Mary Parish in North College Hill, have belonged to the Madonna Council of the Knights of Columbus. They have participated in programs designed for Church, Family, Community and Youth. They help the mentally retarded of the community by collecting money. They protest and demonstrate for and with the Pro-Life movement. Many of the people that are active in our parish organizations are members of the Madonna Council. The council is represented by distributors, lectors, ushers, members of St. Vincent de Paul Society, choir members, festival workers, teachers of religious education, leaders for our Boy Scouts, coaches and many other areas in our parish.
One of the primary goals of the council is to help, financially and through prayer, those with vocations to the Priesthood or other religious life. They stand in solidarity with their Priests and Bishops.
Some of the activities include an Easter Egg hunt in the spring, a family picnic in August, the Ladies Night is enjoyed by the wives when the men cook and serve dinner to them and if the spirit moves them, a song after dinner is included.
The wives and daughters of our members are members of the Madonna Ladies Auxiliary. This group supports the men's group, together they sponsor a dance in Jan. The women have a men’s night similar to the men’s ladies night, a costume party in Oct., caroling at Christmas and they adopt a family at Christmas.
Together these men and women come together to pray, play and help each other to exemplify their principles of CHARITY, UNITY, FRATERNITY & PATRIOTISM.
Council meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month at 7700 Seward Ave. Rosary begins at 7:45pm. Contact Past Grand Knight Bob Lachmann for information— 521-1975. Madonna Ladies Auxiliary meets the 3rd Thursday at 7:30pm. Contact President
